12 books released in 2021 I’ve pre-ordered

One of the things that authors always highlight is the importance of pre-orders.

It tells publishers that their books are wanted, they go towards first week sales and establishes a readership before the book even hits shelves. All of these things help authors to get subsequent books deal and more publicity and marketing.

So it’s basically my readerly duty to pre-order a crap tonne of books, right? Yep. Good. Thought so.

Having a pre-order pop through the door is one of my favourite things, and it’s honestly something I do so I don’t forget to pick up new books by my favourite authors.

These are the books I have pre-ordered for the rest of 2021:

‘Take Me Home Tonight’ by Morgan Matson (4 May)

Morgan Matson’s books are a comforting, happy place of contemporary YA novels and it’s been a few years since her last novel so I’m more than ready. Her characters are real, flawed and loveable, and so are the love interests. It’s also set in NYC.

‘The Anthropocene Reviewed’ by John Green (18 May)

New John Green! This is his first non-fiction book and I’m really intrigued. This collection of essays is adapted from one of his popular podcasts of the same name and I haven’t actually listened to many of the episodes so it’ll be new material for me. I’ll be listening to the audiobook which John Green himself narrates himself.

‘Becoming Mila’ by Estelle Maskame (3 June)

I really enjoy Estelle Maskame’s contemporary YA. They’re dramatic and sexy, filled with complex characters and really interesting dynamics. Her books are usually set in the US in steaming hot summers and I need that in my life.

‘The Wish’ by Nicholas Sparks (28 September)

Stop that. Stop judging me. Right now. I haven’t read a Nicholas Sparks since about 2013 and yet I continue to pre-order them in hardback. I don’t get it either.

‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (7 October)

Two reasons why I pre-ordered this: 1) it’s a new Penguin Clothbound Classic so duh, 2) I’ve actually never read this… I really don’t know how it’s escaped me for so long.

‘Any Way the Wind Blows’ by Rainbow Rowell (6 July)

I’ve pre-ordered the Waterstones Exclusive edition, sadly not the signed one as that sold out (ironically) after it was announced on Twitter by Rowell during the night in the UK… BUT, I do get the special edition with gorgeous sprayed edges and I am EXCITED.

‘Reputation’ by Lex Croucher (8 July)

I’m always suspicious of YouTubers getting book deals, but I’ve followed Lex for a really long time and I do have faith that she’s a good writer. I really hope she is, anyway. Also, this is meant to have a Bridgerton/Mean Girls vibe which I am so here for.

‘All Our Hidden Gifts’ by Caroline O’Donoghue (1 July)

Witches, tarot and female friendship? I’m in. Plus, I love Caroline O’Donoghue’s podcast, Sentimental Garbage, already so I honestly can’t see myself not falling totally in love with this.

‘Once Upon a Crime’ by Robin Stevens (5 August)

This is a collection of short stories from the ‘Murder Most Unladylike’ series which I adore. I’m so ready for more Daisy and Hazel now that the series has finished and hopefully this will tide me over until Robin Stevens’ new series starts next year.

‘Fence: Disarmed’ by Sarah Rees Brennan (18 May)

I love the graphic novel series, and I loved the first instalment in Sarah Rees Brennan’s prose adaptation. Book one ended on a serious cliffhanger and I cannot wait to get back to Kings Row and these complex boys.

‘One Last Stop’ by Casey McQuiston (1 June)

I, along with pretty much every other person in the book world, loved ‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ and I’m so looking forward to seeing what she delivers next. I really do hope they eventually get picked up in the UK though.

‘Someone I Used to Know’ by Paige Toon (24 June)

Paige Toon is one of my favourite authors and her books are one of my literary highlights every single year. Her contemporary, emotional love stories are also compelling and so involving. I love her books and she’s an immediate pre-order, the second a new book is announced.
